Parental controls on Telstra Broadband Australia

It’s easy with Safe Surfer to setup parental controls on Telstra Broadband Australia. Along with protecting your privacy, we also use our own behind-the-scenes technology to block porn and other harmful online content. This guide will efficiently walk you through how to setup protection.

A lot of Telstra Wi-Fi routers (particularly Smart Modem models) don't support changing the required installation settings. If this is the case, there are still a few options available: check out our Wi-Fi Lifeguard router solution (so that devices connect to the Safe Surfer Wi-Fi instead), or our ASUS-brand router guide. These are installed alongside your current Telstra Wi-Fi. Alternatively, you could use our apps.

Step 1: Install DNS

For nbn / ADSL / Velocity / Cable (with Adapter) modems, enter 10.0.0.138 into your web browser's search bar at the top of the window. If the DNS settings are locked, we would suggest installing a separate router (such as ASUS) connected to your Telstra gateway. You can find out more by clicking this link.
For Cable (without Adapter) modems, enter 192.166.0.1 into your web browser's search bar at the top of the window.
For Telstra Gateway Frontier / Telstra Smart Modem, enter 192.168.0.1 into your web browser's search bar at the top of the window.

Type admin into the username box. The password will be either Telstra or the password as written on the bottom of the router. Click the “Sign in” button.

Some Telstra routers are made by NETGEAR, and others are made by another manufacturer. Check the respective sections below for the correct guide.

For Telstra routers made by NETGEAR

Click the Internet menu.

Under the “Domain Name Server (DNS) Address” section, click the button found next to Use These DNS Servers.

For “Primary DNS”, type 104.197.28.121 into the text boxes.
For “Secondary DNS”, type 104.155.237.225 into the text boxes.

Click the Apply button. Once the changes have been saved, click the Logout button found at the upper-right corner.

For Telstra routers made by other manufacturers

Click "Advanced options", then click Local Network. Under "DNS Provider" drop-down box, select the option where you can install custom DNS settings.

For “Primary DNS”, type 104.197.28.121 into the text box.
For “Secondary DNS”, type 104.155.237.225 into the text box.

If there is a menu for a technology called IPv6, disable this feature.

Save the changes. You might need to restart your router.

Step 2: Verify the installation

Verify the protection installation by visiting ExampleAdultSite.com inside a web browser. This is a safe website for testing to see if pornographic websites are being blocked. If it's not blocked, review the previous steps.

If you have any Apple devices (that is, iPhones, iPads, or Macs), and you're not directly protecting them via the Safe Surfer dashboard, you will also need to enable the Limit Adult Websites setting on those devices to disable the Private Browsing Mode feature for Safari—this feature ignores the Safe Surfer filtering received from your home router:

For each iPhone and iPad device, navigate to the Settings app > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions (and enable this feature if it’s not already turned on) > Store, Web, Siri & Game Center Content (on older devices, this menu is called Content Restrictions) > Web Content > set to Limit Adult Websites. Once you’re done, navigate back to the Screen Time main menu, which will save the changes.
For each Mac device, navigate to the System Settings app > Screen Time > Content & Privacy (and enable this feature if it’s not already turned on) > Store, Web, Siri & Game Center Content (on older devices, this menu is called Content Restrictions) > under Web Content, set Access to Web Content to Limit Adult Websites, then click the Done button at the lower-right corner. Once you’re done, navigate back to the Screen Time main menu, which will save the changes. Open the Safari app > click the Safari text on the left-hand side of the menu bar (at the top of the screen) > click the Quit option. Repeat this process for every user account on the Mac.
