Why are there two (or more) versions of Safe Surfer installed on a Windows device?

We rebuilt and published the new Safe Surfer for Windows app in September 2023. The new app features the latest Windows technology to provide an easy protection experience. If you're seeing more than one Safe Surfer app listing on your computer, it could be due to the following reasons:

Reason 1: You have an old version of the 2023 app installed alongside the latest (most likely cause)

Due to how modern-day computer security works (along with us providing new features and bug fixes to the Safe Surfer app), we need to periodically update the app. If you installed the Safe Surfer app on a device a while ago and we've since updated what's called the certificate for the app installer, you might see two versions of the app installed. This can be resolved easily by uninstalling both versions, and then downloading and installing the latest version of the app installer from the Safe Surfer dashboard.

You'll need to uninstall both versions of the app. Once you've done that, the Safe Surfer app installer is downloaded as part of the protection setup process, which you can find out how to perform by clicking this link.

You don't have to reinstall the protection itself—the guide link will simply help you redownload the latest version of the app installer. You can ignore the rest of the guide once you've downloaded and installed the latest version of the app.

Reason 2: You have the pre-2023 Windows app installed alongside the 2023 app (least likely cause)

If you installed the Safe Surfer app on a Windows device before September 2023, you probably have our old app installed. The new app features much better technology, so we strongly recommend upgrading to the new version. This involves going through our upgrade guide. During that guide, once you've fully uninstalled the pre-2023 Windows app, we then suggest leaving the guide, going through our 2023 uninstallation guide, and then starting fresh by clicking this link.
