Want to protect an Apple Mac device from harmful online content? You're in the right place! This guide will efficiently walk you through how to do so.

We recommend that you check to see if the Apple device you're protecting is running at least macOS 11 Big Sur. Not sure? You can check by clicking the Apple icon at the upper left > About this Mac. If you are stuck on macOS 10.14 Mojave, you might need to update old apps to a 64-bit version so that you can upgrade your macOS version. For example, apps like Microsoft Office might need to be updated (through the Microsoft AutoUpdate application). Click this link to learn more. Click this link to learn how to upgrade your Mac to the latest version of macOS.

1. Create a macOS device listing on the Safe Surfer dashboard

Once you have available the Apple device you would like to protect, sign in to a user account with administrative permissions. If you have only one user account, chances are that this account will have said permissions. If this user account belongs to a child, we highly recommend taking time now to make a new user account (that you will set to have administrator permissions), then demote your child's account to have "Standard" user permissions. This means that your child will not be able to remove the filter installation.

If you need to, you can make a new user account for yourself (as an administrator) in System Preferences (the cog icon on the dock) > Users & Groups > click the lock icon and provide credentials > click the "+" icon > make a new Administrator account and set a password for it > demote the user account that belongs to the child to "Standard" permissions.

Signed into your user account, click the Safari app on the dock.

Visit the Safe Surfer dashboard and log in. Click the "My Devices" menu button found on the left sidebar.

Click the "+ New Device" button.

Under the section labeled "Protect a Device", click the "This Device" menu.

Under the section labeled "This Device", click the "Apply Filter Settings" menu.

Enter a name for the device you are protecting, then click the "Accept" button.

Under the section labeled "Apply Filter Settings", click the "Download" button.

When you are asked if you would like to allow downloads on "my.safesurfer.io", click the "Allow" button.

Click the search icon belonging to "Safe Surfer.mobileconfig" in the Downloads prompt.

2. Install the Safe Surfer filter profile

Double-click the "Safe Surfer.mobileconfig" file.

macOS will inform you that the filter profile is available for installation in the System Preferences app.

Click the System Preferences app on the dock.

After the System Preferences app has opened, click the "Profiles" menu at the lower right.

On the "Safe Surfer" profile listing, click the "Install" button at the upper right. Our profile will be unsigned; this is safe to install as you downloaded it from our official dashboard website.

When macOS asks for your permission to install the profile, click the "Install" button.

Enter the credentials belonging to a user with administrative permissions. For example, John (or John Smith); Passw0rd.

The filter profile should now be installed system-wide.

3. Create a user profile for your child

If your child already has a user profile (and it has been set to have standard permissions as per the images below), you can skim through this section.

Click the group of dots icon to go back to System Preferences home. Click the "Users & Groups" menu. Click the padlock icon at the lower left. Enter the credentials belonging to a user with administrative permissions.

Click the "+" icon at the lower left. Fill in the fields to make a user account with standard permissions. This means that your child will not be able to uninstall the filter profile without your permission. Ensure that only you know the password to your administrative user account.

4. Finalise protection

To configure blocked sites for this device, click this link. Click the "Block Sites" button on the left sidebar, click the blue bubble in the middle, select the device you made (labeled "User's Mac" or similar), and toggle on the switch found next to "Override defaults". You can now select through the list of categories to block. Click the "Save" button at the upper right once you're done. You can now log out of the Safe Surfer dashboard.

Switch to the standard user account belonging to your child (click the Apple logo at the upper left > Log Out > sign in to the other user). Click the Safari icon on the dock.

Verify that your filter installation is working by visiting ExampleAdultSite.com. This is a safe website designated for testing if pornographic sites are being blocked. This site should be blocked.

Protection complete
