Some of our services appear not to be working at the moment.

Our team has been notified, and is working on sorting out the issue.

The Safe Surfer team has been busy improving our Android app. This guide provides a simple walkthrough of features to look out for when protecting a new device.

1. Download the Safe Surfer app from the Play Store

It's easy to download the Safe Surfer app on Android. Simply open up the Play Store app on the device you want to protect, search for "Safe Surfer", find our app at the top of the list, and tap Install. Simple!

2. Open and configure the Safe Surfer app

Once the Safe Surfer app has been downloaded to the device, tap the "Open" button. Agree to our VPN disclaimer terms and tap "Get Started". Log in with your Safe Surfer account and give the device a friendly name, e.g. John's Galaxy.

Don't have a Safe Surfer account? You can create an account for free from the Safe Surfer online dashboard:

When the app asks who is using this device, select the "Admin" option. We will change this setting later. Press the OK button when the VPN Information box comes up. Press OK in the little bubble that comes up.

To finish app setup:

Tap the grey "Disable Battery Optimisation" box. Tap Go to Settings. Tap the "Apps not optimised" drop-down box and select the "All" option. Tap the search icon and search for "Safe Surfer". Switch the toggle next to Safe Surfer to disable this feature. Disabling this feature ensures that Android doesn't attempt to modify the status of Safe Surfer while it's running for the purpose of saving power. Close the Settings app.
Open the Safe Surfer app. Tap the grey "Enable Permissions" box. Enable the "Allow permission" toggle. Enabling this feature ensures that the VPN service that Safe Surfer creates (to route request traffic through to us) isn't interrupted during a device restart. Close the Settings app.

Open the Safe Surfer app again. Tap the menu button at the upper left. Tap the Blocked Sites menu.

Blocked Sites menu

Toggle the categories and services that you would like to block on the current device. If you block a parent category (e.g. Games), this will block anything related to Games in addition to all its child categories. Once you're done, tap the tick button at the upper left.

For example, in this case, all sites found in the Games parent category will be blocked, in addition to blocking other child categories such as Fortnite and Minecraft). Remember that you can always configure filter settings at a later time.

Blocked Sites toggles (This Device)

Tap the Menu button at the upper right. Tap the Settings menu and scroll down to the Settings section. Tap the Pin check box. Tap the Set PIN field and enter in a digit pin. Make sure to use one that you can remember! Tap the OK button. If the app doesn't immediately ask you for a PIN, you might need to enable the PIN box again.

Tap the Menu button at the upper right. Tap the Settings menu and scroll down to the General section. Tap the toggle for Device admin (prevent uninstall). Tap OK. Tap Activate. This helps prevent uninstalling Safe Surfer from the home screen or the app draw.

Tap the Menu button at the upper right. Tap the Settings menu. Tap "Revoke Settings Access". Tap Revoke Access.

3. Finished

Congratulations, you're now done! If you want to monitor devices that you've protected with Safe Surfer, you can do so by installing the Safe Surfer app on your phone, logging in with your Safe Surfer account, and selecting Admin mode. From the Menu button, you can monitor devices connected to your account, configure email alert settings, and view device usage history.
